Grounds for acquiring citizenship of the Republic of Armenia:

A person under 18 (eighteen) years of age who has no nationality, is entitled to apply to the relevant authorities of the Republic of Armenia to obtain citizenship providing that this person has:

  • Three years of permanent uninterrupted residence in the territory of the Republic of Armenia;
  • Is proficient in the Armenian language;
  • Is familiar with the basic provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia.

 The above requirements do not apply to persons who are not Armenian nationals if:

  • The parent or parents of that person had the RA citizenship, or were born in the Republic of Armenia and the person formally asked for the RA citizenship within three years prior to his/her 18th (eighteenth) birthday;
  • A person who has performed services for the Republic of Armenia;
  • A person who voluntarily renounced the RA citizenship, valid from 1995.

In the above cases, citizenship is acquired through a simplified procedure, IE: the general rules for the acquisition of nationality do not apply. The application for citizenship of the RA is submitted in person to the authorized body of the Government of the Republic of Armenia.

The dual and/or multiple citizenship:

A citizen of the Republic of Armenia, who also has foreign citizenship, is considered to be only a citizen of the Republic of Armenia and enjoys all the rights, and bear all responsibilities to their country, except for cases stipulated by law or international treaty of the Republic of Armenia. This rule also applies to persons who improperly abandoned their RA citizenship post 1995. The RA legislation obliges the RA citizen who has received foreign citizenship, to notify the authorized body of the Government of Armenia no later than within one month. The law provides for liability for breach of this requirement.
