Military duty of persons who hold dual nationality
Compulsory military service for persons with dual citizenship:
Citizens of the Republic of Armenia holding additional foreign citizenship or persons who have renounced their RA citizenship after the 1st of January 1995, as well as, persons who unilaterally renounced their RA citizenship must complete compulsory military or contractual military service in the Republic of Armenia. This provision also applies to the citizens of the Republic of Armenia who served in the country of their second citizenship. A foreign citizen who has received an RA citizenship is exempt from compulsory military service if he/she had previously served in the armed forces of another country for at least 12 (twelve) months.
Conditions and procedures for exemption of citizens that have not undergone compulsory military service, in violation of the established order:
The law “On the Citizens who Have Not Passed compulsory military service in violation with the order”, adopted on the 17th of December 2003 applies to citizens of the Republic of Armenia who have not passed military service from the autumn of 1992 until May 2011. The law provides for their exemption from criminal prosecution if they carry out the mandatory penalty payments specified by the law.
Call for compulsory military service in the Republic of Armenia:
Mandatory military service applies to all male citizens of the Republic of Armenia from 18 (eighteen) to 27 (twenty-seven) years of age and in some cases from 18 (eighteen) to 35 (thirty-five) years of age, for persons who for health reasons are fit for military service. The duration of military service is two years. The standard military call is given on the orders of the President of the Republic of Armenia twice per year, from April to June and from October to December. A citizen called up for compulsory military service must report to the police station where he is registered.
Exemption or temporary exemption from military service:
Exemption from compulsory military service in the Republic of Armenia is provided when:
- A citizen of the Republic of Armenia is unfit for compulsory military service due to health conditions;
- A citizen is the only son in the family, or whose parent, brother or sister died in the defense of the Republic of Armenia or died in the service of the armed forces of the Republic of Armenia;
- There is a decision of the Government;
- A foreign citizen has passed military service in order to obtain the Republic of Armenia citizenship;
- A citizen has a Ph.D., or another doctorate.
The Republic of Armenia citizen may be temporarily exempted from military service when:
- Due to marital status;
- For the purpose of the study;
- For health reasons.
